How to Get Legally Married in Ontario — Step by Step with My Professional Assistance
How to Get Legally Married in Ontario — Step by Step with My Professional Assistance
As a licensed Marriage Officiant in Ontario, I guide you through every step of the legal marriage process — from obtaining your licence to completing your ceremony and ensuring your marriage is officially registered.
Here is exactly what you need to do:
Step 1: Obtain Your Ontario Marriage Licence
To be legally married in Ontario, the first requirement is getting an official Marriage Licence.
I help you understand the process clearly, but here’s what you must prepare:
Visit any municipal office or city hall in Ontario.
Complete the Marriage Licence Application Form.
Both partners must sign the form.
Bring valid identification for each applicant (passport, birth certificate, driver’s licence, PR card, or immigration record).
The licence is valid for 90 days and can be used anywhere in Ontario.
Step 2: Your Wedding Ceremony (Performed by Me)
Once you have your Marriage Licence, I am able to legally perform your ceremony.
During the ceremony:
I officiate the marriage in accordance with Ontario law.
You must have two witnesses present.
I carefully complete all required sections of the Marriage Licence to ensure everything is legally accurate.
My role is to make the ceremony both beautiful and legally valid.
Step 3: I Register Your Marriage Within 48 Hours
After your ceremony:
I submit your completed Marriage Licence to the
Office of the Registrar General in Thunder Bay within 48 hours, as required by law.
This step officially registers your marriage in the Province of Ontario.
You don’t need to do anything — I handle this part for you.
Step 4: Apply for Your Official Marriage Certificate
Your marriage certificate is not issued automatically.
About 12 weeks after the ceremony, once your marriage has been registered, you can apply for your official Marriage Certificate through ServiceOntario:
Online (fastest)
By mail
In person
You will need this certificate for:
Name changes
Immigration or sponsorship applications
Legal identification
Government records
If needed, I can guide you on how and when to apply.
In Summary — What I Do for You
As your licensed Marriage Officiant, I will:
Perform your legal wedding ceremony
Ensure all documents are properly completed
Register your marriage within 48 hours
Guide you through the entire legal process
After Your Wedding Ceremony — What Happens Next
As a licensed Marriage Officiant in Ontario, I am responsible for completing all legal steps after your ceremony to ensure your marriage is registered correctly and in full compliance with provincial regulations.
Here is exactly what happens after your wedding:
1-Record of Solemnization — Given to You Immediately
At the end of your ceremony, I will provide you with your Record of Solemnization of Marriage.
This is your personal proof of marriage.
Please keep it somewhere safe.
Note: This is not your official Marriage Certificate.
2-Submission of Your Marriage Licence (Handled by the Officiant)
As your officiant, it is my legal duty to submit your completed Marriage Licence to the:
Office of the Registrar General, Thunder Bay
within 48 hours of your ceremony.
This step officially registers your marriage in Ontario.
The government does not send a confirmation notice — this is normal.
You do not need to follow up; I take care of this responsibility for you.
3-Applying for Your Marriage Certificate (Your Responsibility)
Once your marriage has been registered — usually 10–12 weeks after your ceremony — you may apply for your official Marriage Certificate through ServiceOntario.
You will need this certificate for:
Legal name change
Immigration or sponsorship
Banking and insurance
Government and legal documents
The online application is the fastest option.
4- Optional: Legal Name Change
If you choose to legally change your last name after marriage, you may apply through the Office of the Registrar General once your Marriage Certificate is issued.
I can guide you on when and how to complete this process if needed.
5- What I Do for You as Your Licensed Officiant
As your Marriage Officiant, I will:
Perform your ceremony legally and professionally
Provide your Record of Solemnization
Complete and submit your Marriage Licence within 48 hours
Ensure your marriage is registered correctly
Guide you through all legal steps before and after your ceremony
While the Marriage Certificate and name change application must be completed by the couple, I remain available to answer questions and support you throughout the process.
